37 days: Ancient Canopy
Share
Today I ventured into the heart of Praslin Island to explore the ancient wonders of the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve. The moment I entered the reserve, I was enveloped by the towering palm trees, their leaves gently rustling in the breeze. The coco de mer palms, with their huge, distinctive seeds, stood like silent guardians of a bygone era. There's something profoundly humbling about being surrounded by such ancient life, knowing that these trees have lived through centuries.
The air was thick with the scent of moist earth and lush vegetation, a sensory reminder of the thriving ecosystem all around. Every turn in the trail revealed a new wonder-whether it was the call of a rare bird or the sight of a delicate orchid hidden among the foliage. I felt a deep connection to the natural world today, a reminder of nature's beauty and resilience.
As I walked through this ancient forest, I found myself reflecting on the journey so far, the places I've seen, and the people I've met. There's a sense of peace that comes from being in such a timeless place, where the world seems to slow down, if only for a moment.
Tonight, as I rest, the echoes of the Vallée de Mai will remain with me, a gentle reminder of the simplicity and beauty that surrounds us, if only we take the time to look.
