Day 41: Carlos Alvarez

The Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo was like a living museum to me. Each cobblestone whispered tales of the past. As I navigated through its historic streets, I met Carlos Alvarez, a local historian and guide. His profound knowledge of his city's legacy was as captivating as the tales themselves.

With a sparkle in his eye, Carlos shared stories of the first cathedral and the ancient homes that line the old streets, making history come alive. The narrator combined Taino, African, and European influences to shape the Dominican identity.

Carlos showed us a small courtyard that served as the heart of family life in colonial times. He was passionate about Santo Domingo's heritage and eager to share it with others.

As the day ended, we discussed the significance of preserving historical narratives for future generations. Carlos's commitment to his city, its stories, and its people left a lasting impression on me. It reminded me that history is not just about places and events, but also about the individuals who keep those stories alive.

While walking back to my accommodation, the sunset painted the colonial facades in a golden hue, providing a perfect end to a day rich in history and human connection.
