First Journey Day 32: Dances of the Depths
Date: September 25, 2023
Location: Ohrid, North Macedonia
In Ohrid, North Macedonia, the day opened softly: a lakeside town gathered around one of Europe’s most ancient lakes, where Byzantine chapels keep quiet watch and water sets the rhythm of life. Partly cloudy skies and crisp air framed a slow, reflective wander.
Lake Morning Reverie
Today was a day of reflection and serenity in Ohrid. The town, with its rich history and stunning landscapes, provided a perfect backdrop for introspection. I began my day with a boat ride on Lake Ohrid. The gentle ripples of the water, combined with the soft hum of the boat's engine, created a meditative atmosphere. As I gazed at the distant mountains and the historic sites dotting the shoreline, I felt a deep connection to the past and the countless stories this place holds.
Contours of St. John at Kaneo
The Church of St. John at Kaneo, perched on a cliff, was a sight to behold. Its ancient stones whispered tales of devotion and timelessness. I took a moment to sketch its silhouette against the vast expanse of the lake, capturing its essence on paper.
Wandering the Old Town
Later, I wandered through the old town, where every corner seemed to hold a secret. The narrow streets, lined with quaint houses and bustling cafes, were alive with the sounds of laughter and chatter. I engaged with a few local artists, admiring their crafts and sharing stories of our artistic journeys.
Sketches & Stillness
As the day came to a close, I sat by the lake, watching the sun set behind the mountains. The golden hues of the sky reflected on the water, creating a mesmerizing tableau. Today, Ohrid gifted me with moments of peace, inspiration, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of life.
A City in Sync with the Lake
The town seemed to breathe with the water’s slow pulse—boats murmuring, stone steps cooling, and evening light stitching together cliff, chapel, and shore.
