First Journey Day 68: The Timeless Traveler
Date: October 31, 2023
Location: Trondheim, Norway
In Trondheim, Norway, the day moved between soft cloud and pale light. Gothic stone, the Nidelva’s calm, and autumn’s chill set the stage for quiet looking and slower breaths.
Walking Through Nidaros Cathedral
Today was a day of introspection and inspiration. Trondheim, with its rich history and stunning architecture, has a way of making one feel both small and significant at the same time. The highlight of my day was undoubtedly the visit to the Nidaros Cathedral. The sheer grandeur of the place, combined with the intricate details in its design, left me in awe. As I walked through its corridors, I could almost hear the whispers of the past, telling tales of times gone by.
Light Through Stained Glass
The stained glass windows, in particular, caught my attention. The way the light filtered through them, casting colourful patterns on the floor, felt almost magical. It made me reflect on the impermanence of life and the lasting impact of art. In that moment, I felt a deep connection to all the artists who had come before me, leaving their mark for future generations to admire.
Across the Old Town Bridge
I took a brief stroll along the Old Town Bridge. The calm waters of the river mirrored the serene skies, and the gentle breeze carried with it the scent of autumn. The city seemed content to move at the river’s pace.
Choosing Stillness Over Sketching
I didn’t reach for the sketchbook today. Instead, I let the impressions settle—the stone, the glass, the water—so I can translate them in the studio with a steadier hand.
Gratitude at Dusk
As the day came to an end, gratitude rose quietly. Gratitude for the journey I’m on, for the places I’ve been, and for the memories I’m creating. Trondheim, you’ve been a muse, and I can’t wait to carry today’s light into my next piece of art.
Travel Notes
- Weather: Partly cloudy; 3–8 °C. Crisp air, a hint of mist near the river, and sleeves pulled a little tighter against the breeze.
- Scents: Damp leaves, cool stone, and the faint sweetness of autumn on the Nidelva.
- Sounds: Footsteps on cobblestones, low voices in the square, and, from afar, a bell that seemed to hold the hour a bit longer.
- Reflection: Light through glass as a lesson in impermanence—and how art keeps a patient conversation with time.
