Rose-Red Reverie — inspired by the Treasury in Petra, Jordan.

Date: September 12, 2023
Location: Petra, Jordan

In Petra, the rose-red city hewn by the Nabataeans in present-day Jordan, clear September light poured through the Siq to the Treasury. Amid sandstone canyons and echoing footfalls, the day unfolded as a quiet exchange between photography, sketching, and story.

First Light on the Treasury

Today was a day of profound reflection and artistic inspiration. Petra, with its ancient ruins and stories etched in stone, was a canvas waiting to be explored. The morning sun cast a golden hue on the iconic Treasury, making it gleam like a jewel amidst the rocky terrain. I decided to engage in a photography session, capturing the play of light and shadow on the ancient structures. Each click of the camera felt like I was preserving a moment in time, a memory of a civilization long gone.

Echoes in the Siq

As I wandered through the narrow canyons, the whispers of the past seemed to echo around me. I met a local Bedouin storyteller who shared tales of their nomadic life and the legends of Petra. Their stories added layers of depth to the already mesmerizing landscape.

Sketching Between Columns

Later, I found a quiet spot overlooking the city and took out my sketchbook. The intricate carvings and the vastness of the ruins inspired me to create, to capture the essence of Petra on paper.

Dusk Over the Rose-Red City

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, I felt a deep connection to this place. The day ended with a cup of traditional Jordanian tea at a local café, where I reflected on the beauty and history of Petra.

A Day Etched in Memory

Today was not just about sightseeing; it was about immersing myself in the stories, the art, and the culture of Petra. It was a day that will forever be etched in my memory.

Travel Notes

  • Weather: Clear skies; ~20 °C at dawn rising to ~28 °C by afternoon. Warm rock radiance in the open, cool relief in the shaded Siq.
  • Scents: Sun-warmed sandstone, dust afterfoot, and the gentle sweetness of cardamom in Jordanian tea.
  • Sounds: Footsteps and murmurs threading the canyon; a storyteller’s voice; the soft shutter of the camera.
  • Reflection: Petra holds light and legend in the same breath—each image and line a small act of keeping time.
