First Journey Day 31: Twilight Tapestries
“Twilight Tapestries,” sketched after an evening drifting over Skopje’s rooftops and river lights.
Date: September 24, 2023
Location: Skopje, North Macedonia
I arrived in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, where fortress walls look over the Vardar and the Ottoman-era Old Bazaar anchors daily life. A day of gentle wandering unfolded in soft autumn light.
From Fortress Walls to City Lights
Today was a day of reflection and exploration in Skopje. The city, with its blend of old and new, provided a rich tapestry of experiences. I began my day with a visit to the Skopje Fortress. The ancient stones whispered tales of bygone eras, and the panoramic view of the city was breathtaking. The Vardar River, flowing gracefully below, seemed to carry with it stories of the past and hopes for the future.
Weaving Through the Old Bazaar
After the fortress, I wandered through the Old Bazaar. The vibrant marketplace was a sensory delight, with the aroma of spices filling the air and the sound of merchants calling out their wares. I was particularly drawn to a small shop selling traditional Macedonian crafts. The intricate designs and the passion of the craftsman were truly inspiring.
A Pause at Macedonia Square
Later in the afternoon, I found a quaint café near the Macedonia Square. As I sipped my coffee, I watched the world go by, observing the locals and tourists alike, each engrossed in their own world. It was a moment of stillness amidst the hustle and bustle.
Vardar River at Dusk
The day concluded with a serene boat ride on the Vardar River. The gentle sway of the boat and the setting sun painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, providing a perfect backdrop for introspection.
Quiet Gratitude
Skopje, with its rich history and vibrant present, has left an indelible mark on my heart. As I retire for the night, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences this journey has bestowed upon me.
Travel Notes
- Weather: Partly cloudy; high 24°C, low 13°C. Mild breezes along the fortress walls and a cool hush by the river at sunset.
- Scents: Spices and fresh coffee in the Old Bazaar; a faint mineral note from the river in the evening.
- Sounds: Merchants calling, footsteps on stone lanes, café chatter near Macedonia Square, and the quiet lap of water against the boat.
- Reflection: Skopje’s contrasts—fortress and fountains, bazaar and boulevards—settled into a calm that invited unhurried looking.
