Second Journey Day 161: Haji Sulaiman
Today was an incredible day exploring the water village of Kampong Ayer. The tranquil boat ride through the village was a delightful experience and offered a unique perspective on life in Bandar Seri Begawan. The houses on stilts connected by wooden walkways were a sight to behold.
While walking through the village, I met a local craftsman named Haji Sulaiman. He has been making traditional wood carvings for over three decades. Haji Sulaiman shared fascinating stories about the history of the village and the importance of his art. He showed me some of his exquisite carvings, each piece telling a story of Brunei's rich cultural heritage.
We spent some time talking about the changes he has seen in Kampong Ayer over the years. His passion for preserving traditional art forms was truly inspiring. I sketched a few pieces of his work, capturing the intricate details and essence of his craftsmanship.
Before leaving, Haji Sulaiman presented me with a small wooden carving as a memento of our meeting. It was a touching gesture that made the day even more memorable. As I walked back to my accommodation, I felt a deep appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of Brunei and the warm hospitality of its people.
