Fourth Journey Day 105: Gatekeeper’s Watch

The Garden District felt like a dreamscape of ironwork, trailing vines, and timeworn facades. I walked down Magazine Street, past boutique shops and hidden courtyards, before stepping into the quiet shade of an oak-lined avenue. The houses stood still, their histories woven into every ornate balcony and fading pastel wall. Some had doors in deep reds and blues, while others were framed by delicate lace curtains that barely moved in the breeze.

I paused near a wrought-iron gate wrapped in ivy, sketching its curving lines and the shadows it cast on the pavement. A few blocks away, a cat lounged on the steps of a large, white-columned house, flicking its tail as if guarding ancient secrets.

A cafe on the corner was the perfect place to sit and think. I sipped a chicory coffee and watched the streetcars glide by, their steady hum blending into the rhythm of the city. There's a quiet elegance to the way New Orleans holds onto its stories, its past and present intertwined.

Tonight I'll begin layering torn paper and textures into something that captures the slow, deliberate beauty of today.
