Fifth Journey Day 29: Where the Fog Listens

Date: June 6, 2025
Location: Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Scotland
I spent most of the afternoon inside a small café just above the harbor. It was warm inside, and the windows were foggy. The rain never really stopped, but it would get less and more intense like someone breathing. I ordered a cup of black tea and didn't rush it. I sat there with my sketchbook, letting my pencil do its own thing as it traced the shapes around me: the blurred outlines of boats, the ghostly shapes of seagulls, and the long, tapered shape of a mast leaning into the mist.
It felt like drawing memory before it was fully formed — the edges were unsure, and the drawing suggested more than it showed. I didn't try to correct or clarify. The mood outside didn't match that. It asked for softness and patience. Even the colors I imagined were muted — not greys exactly, but a kind of blue that looked tired from being around salt.
There was a couple near the corner, maybe locals, speaking quietly in a way that was hard to understand but still felt. The inside smelled a little bit like cinnamon and wet wool. It has a comforting scent. At one point, someone opened the door, and a gust of wind brought in a piece of seaweed and diesel. I liked that too — it broke the silence.
I didn't do much else today, but that's okay because I didn't need to. I was happy to stay still. Sometimes, just watching without expecting anything in return is enough. Fog is honest because it doesn't hide things, it just makes the world seem softer. I think I needed that today.
I'll go to bed early. Let things settle.
