Fifth Journey Day 33: Metal Warmth in Cold Air

Date: June 10, 2025
Location: Bodø, Norway

I spent the afternoon walking along the harbourfront, following the shape of the sea without a specific plan. The wind pressed against my sleeves and collar, but I kept going. I went partly for the cold, which cleared my head, and partly for the rhythm of it. The sea here feels contained, held in place by stone and industry. There are rusted boats anchored against the pier. The paint is peeling because the weather is worse than anyone expected.

I stopped at one point to look at a bunch of ropes and buoys tied up on the dock. The cords had stiffened from the salt and age. The red of the buoy had faded to a light pink. I sketched a little — not to capture, but to notice. There's a difference.

There weren't many people around, which I liked. There were a few cyclists. A man was sitting on a bench, watching something I couldn't see. I passed the Stormen Library and thought about going in, but I wasn't ready to be indoors yet. The sky looked like it was going to rain, but it didn't. That also felt right.

There's a light here that doesn't switch between being bright or dim. This keeps the edges sharp. I liked how the metal railings felt warm to the touch, even though the air was cold. I couldn't stop thinking about that contradiction.

It's a calm city — not in noise, but in attitude. It doesn't demand anything. It endures.

Tomorrow I'll move differently. But today, walking was enough.
