Fifth Journey Day 44: Humidity Folded Into Stone

Date: June 21, 2025
Location: Riga, Latvia

I got to Riga this morning. The first thing I noticed was how the city is laid out — the streets are wide, the buildings are solid, and the trees are evenly spaced along the stone sidewalks. After visiting Pärnu, which is quite open, I feel like there's a certain relaxed density here, but it doesn't feel closed off. The light was constant throughout the day, filtered through thin clouds, softening the edges of everything without dulling them.

I spent the afternoon walking through the Art Nouveau district. The building fronts look like they're breathing. Their curving lines rise and fall across stone surfaces. They repeat patterns of leaves, flowers, and calm faces watching from high windows. The buildings appear at once still and moving. My eyes kept going back to the way the arches fold into each other, how the sculpted forms sit slightly above the walls, catching the pale light in a calm way.

These designs are soft, which makes them easy to look at. The longer I stood in front of some of the buildings, the more I noticed. I saw a small bird's nest on a balcony railing. I also saw a face half-hidden by vines growing around it. I noticed the exact line where plaster meets window frame.

I felt calm, but also a little nervous. The city doesn't force its own agenda on you; it lets you find your own rhythm as you explore it. The air felt moist on my skin as I walked, and it felt nice.

Tonight, as the sky slowly turns a deeper shade of gray, the air feels a little cooler. A light breeze blows through the open window. You can smell stone, traffic, and flowers. The city is quiet, but it's still awake. I feel relaxed, like I have time to take it all in.
