Fifth Journey Day 47: Breath of the Courtyard

Date: June 24, 2025
Location: Vilnius, Lithuania
The first breath I took in Vilnius felt different. It was quieter, but not in the way you would think. The city doesn't move forward; it becomes more focused on itself. I spent a lot of the afternoon walking through the Old Town courtyards. They reveal themselves slowly, hidden behind narrow streets, and their entrances are easy to miss unless you're looking for them.
Each courtyard had its own quiet atmosphere. Some had low arches covered with ivy, while others opened into small squares where stone paths curved gently around patches of grass or flowers in pots. The walls were mostly soft shades of cream or pale yellow, and their surfaces showed signs of wear from the weather. In some places, there were faint traces of old paint or exposed brick. These were visible where the plaster had thinned.
The light stayed the same all afternoon — warm but soft, making shadows with soft edges in the corners. I noticed how some windows had lace curtains drawn halfway, filtering the sun into delicate patterns on the ground. A few sparrows moved between roofs. Their short, sharp cries broke the quiet.
There is a kind of breath here that moves slowly, as if the city itself only exhales when needed. The rooms feel safe but not closed in. I felt myself moving to the same beat — walking slowly, letting the narrow paths guide me as they came together.
Tonight, the air will still feel warm, but the breeze will feel a little cooler. I can hear the quiet sounds of footsteps on stone and the sound of cutlery from a nearby café through my open window. The city is calm. I feel at ease, like I'm in a place meant for a different kind of listening.
