Fifth Journey Day 67: The Swing Without Weight

Date: July 14, 2025
Location: Vanadzor, Armenia
I spent the afternoon at Vanadzor's train station — not to go anywhere, just to be there. It's a quiet structure, made of pale stone, with long shadows cast by rusted beams and lines of moss along the base of the walls. There weren't many people around. There were a few older men sitting on benches, two women selling fruit from small crates, and a child circling a pillar in silence. The station was mostly empty, but not completely empty. It felt like a pause rather than an end.
I stood near the edge of the platform and watched a freight train pass. It was slow, loud, and indifferent. The windows rattled a little, even though the engine was far away. After it passed, it was so quiet that you could hear it. The wind blew through the wire fences, passing by my ears like a question that wasn't answered.
I didn't take any notes. I didn't take notes. I just looked and let the place press into me.
Later, I walked back through the garden next to the station. An old swing made a noise behind me, but there was no one there. I sat on a low stone wall and traced the outline of a bootprint in the dust.
Vanadzor feels like it's in a kind of limbo — not stuck, but also not moving forward. Even the dogs seem to walk more slowly here. Everyone seems to agree that things will move when they're ready, not a moment before.
I think today's lesson was about being still, not as a way to avoid things or to retreat, but as a way of being. A structure. A held shape. Sometimes, that's all a place asks of you — to be still enough to receive it.
Tomorrow, I'll try to paint from that.
