First Journey Day 22: Terraced Tranquility

‘Terraced Tranquility’ — the Bahá’í Gardens stepping down Mount Carmel above Haifa’s blue bay.

“Terraced Tranquility,” Day 22 — Haifa’s gardens unfolding toward the sea.

Date: September 15, 2023
Location: Haifa, Israel

In Haifa, Israel, I climbed the terraced Bahá’í Gardens on Mount Carmel, where paths curve toward the Mediterranean and quiet symmetry invites reflection beneath a clear sky.

Terraces on Mount Carmel

Today, I found myself enveloped in the serenity of Haifa. The city, with its blend of modernity and history, has a unique charm that's hard to put into words. My highlight was undoubtedly the visit to the Baha'i Gardens and Shrine. As I ascended the terraced gardens, each level offered a new perspective, both literally and metaphorically.

Quiet Moments in the Garden

The tranquility of the place allowed me to reflect on my journey so far. The panoramic view of the city and the Mediterranean Sea was breathtaking, and the climb felt like a soft unfolding of thought and sight.

Symmetry, Faith, and Perspective

The meticulous design, the symmetry of the gardens, and the measured pathways seemed to tell a story—echoing the diverse beliefs and unity that the Baha'i faith represents. Each plant, each stone, felt intentional, like a note placed exactly where it belongs.

Choosing Stillness Over Sketching

I took a moment to sit, sketch, and soak in the surroundings. The gentle breeze and the shade of the trees slowed the afternoon to a hush, and the page filled itself with measured lines.

A City Between Sea and Slope

The chirping of birds and the distant hum of the city below created a harmonious symphony. As the sun began its descent, casting a golden hue over the gardens, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this journey and the myriad of experiences it has brought my way.

Travel Notes

  • Weather: Clear sky, 24–29°C. Warm sun softened by a sea breeze; the stone steps held the day’s heat until sunset.
  • Scents: Fresh hedges and clipped lawns, a hint of pine from Carmel, and salt off the bay.
  • Sounds: Birdsong in the terraces, soft footsteps on gravel, and a distant ferry horn across the harbor.
  • Reflection: Order and openness—symmetry guiding the eye outward to the sea and inward to stillness.
