Casablanca (city, Morocco) meets the Atlantic with a rhythm that blends Art Deco boulevards, ocean air, and living tradition. Between sacred architecture, lively souks, and mint tea by the sea, today unfolded as a study in contrasts.

Among Mosaics and Minarets

I started my day at the Hassan II Mosque, an architectural marvel that stands as a testament to both faith and artistry. The intricate mosaics and towering minarets left me in awe, inspiring a sense of spiritual contemplation.

Markets: Spice, Silver, and Stories

From there, I moved to the bustling markets, where the cacophony of haggling vendors and the aroma of exotic spices filled the air. It was a sensory overload, but in the best way possible. I found myself drawn to a small stall selling antique Berber jewelry, each piece telling a story of its own. I couldn't resist purchasing a beautifully crafted pendant, which I intend to incorporate into my next artwork.

Quiet Moments at a Café

As the day drew to a close, I found a quiet café overlooking the sea. Sipping on Moroccan mint tea, I felt a sense of peace wash over me.

Choosing Stillness Before Sketching

Instead of opening my sketchbook, I let the stillness settle — a pause before paint. The pendant rests in my pocket like a promise to the next canvas.

A City of Contrasts

Today was a reminder that life, much like art, is about embracing contrasts and finding beauty in the juxtapositions. Casablanca, with its blend of the old and new, served as the perfect canvas for today's experiences. I can't wait to translate these feelings into my next piece.

Travel Notes

  • Weather: Overcast, 72°F — soft ocean light, a mild Atlantic breeze, and air salted by the harbor.
  • Scents: Mint tea, cumin and saffron from the souk, a hint of sea spray, and polished silver warmed by the sun.
  • Sounds: Vendors’ calls braided with footsteps on stone, gulls circling the waterfront, and the distant cadence of the call to prayer.
  • Reflection: Contrast clarifies; quiet collects the day’s textures and turns them toward the studio.
