74 days: Footsteps in the Stones

Today I visited the ancient ruins of Wat Phou. It felt like stepping back in time, wandering through the remnants of a long gone empire. The quiet temple complex sat peacefully under the warm sun, with only the sounds of the breeze and distant birds. The temple's stone carvings, weathered but still intricate, spoke volumes of the Khmer's legacy.

As I walked up the stone steps, I met Somchai, a local guide. He shared stories of the temple's connection to Angkor and how it has served as a spiritual site for generations. Somchai's family has lived in the area for years, and he pointed out where his ancestors once worked in the fields below the temple, now covered in green. His deep connection to the place was evident in his voice, and it added a personal touch to the historical significance of Wat Phou.

The view from the top of the temple was breathtaking - lush landscapes stretching all the way to the Mekong River. I sat there for a while, soaking in the tranquility and imagining the people who once worshipped here. It was a reflective and peaceful day, one that left me feeling connected to the past.
