Fourth Journey Day 116: Between Blade and Breath

Today I spent a few hours in Eudovic's art studio, watching the skilled hands of Saint Lucian wood sculptors bring raw wood to life. The air smelled of sawdust and varnish, carrying the weight of history and craftsmanship. I watched as the artisans worked with native wood, each stroke of the chisel revealing faces, bodies, and abstract forms that seemed to breathe with the spirit of the island.

One of the sculptors, an older man with calloused hands, explained how the contours of the wood dictated the final shape-how the grain whispered guidance to those who knew how to listen. I ran my fingers over the polished surface of a finished piece, feeling the warmth and weight of the material. It was a lesson in patience, in seeing potential where others might see only a block of wood.

Back in my room, I sketched rough interpretations of what I had seen. The idea of transformation, of something silent being given a voice, stayed with me. The interplay of form and absence, shadow and light, will guide my next piece.
