Fourth Journey Day 71: Stories Beneath the Stone

The day began with a sense of curiosity as I set out to explore Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. The drive to the fort was quiet, with the lush greenery along the way providing a serene backdrop. Once there, I was struck by the vastness of the grounds, a silent reminder of the colonial influence on this land.
Walking through the ruins of the fort, I traced my fingers across the weathered bricks, feeling the echoes of history embedded in every surface. The cannons, though silent now, seemed to tell stories of a time when the fort guarded the rivers and the lives of those who depended on them.
The afternoon breeze carried the scent of the nearby river, and I sat for a while watching the boats glide gently across the water. A local guide approached and shared fascinating anecdotes about the fort's role in Suriname's colonial past, adding layers to my understanding of the place.
As the day drew to a close, I felt a sense of accomplishment. Today wasn't just about seeing a historical site; it was about connecting with a piece of Suriname's history. The fort stands as a testament to resilience, its walls weathering time and change much like the spirit of this country.
