First Journey Day 72: Rainy Rhythms
Artwork: Rainy Rhythms — inspired by Tallinn’s November drizzle and the patterns learned in a traditional Estonian workshop.
Date: November 4, 2023
Location: Tallinn, Estonia
A day of rain in Tallinn, Estonia, set the tone: Baltic skies, slick cobblestones, and the snug hush of Old Town rooms where craft traditions still breathe. I spent the day inside a traditional workshop, learning how patterns carry memory.
Rain Over Old Town
Today, the rain in Tallinn added a certain charm to the city's cobblestone streets and historic buildings. The weather, although a bit chilly, didn't dampen my spirits. It felt like the city was wrapped in a soft gray shawl.
Inside a Traditional Workshop
The workshop—nestled in the heart of the Old Town—was housed in a quaint building with wooden beams and intricate carvings. The instructor, a kind elderly lady, introduced us to the art of Estonian craft-making. With her guidance, I tried my hand at creating a traditional piece of art, using age-old techniques passed down through generations.
Rhythm in the Making
The rhythmic motions, the feel of the materials, and the intricate patterns were therapeutic. As I worked, the rain's gentle patter against the windows added to the ambiance, echoing the steady beat of hands learning something old and sure.
Patterns Carry Stories
The workshop was not just about crafting; it was a journey into Estonia's rich heritage. Through stories and anecdotes, I learned about the significance of each pattern and the history behind the crafts. By the end of the session, I had not only created a small piece of art but also forged a deeper connection with the culture shaping it.
Streets After the Drizzle
When I stepped out, the rain had eased to a light drizzle, making the streets glisten. The day—filled with learning and creativity—left me quietly fulfilled, grateful for traditions that keep a city's heart beating.
Travel Notes
- Weather: Overcast with moderate rain; high 47.16°F (8.42°C), low 46.6°F (8.11°C). Damp stone, slick cobbles, breath turning faintly to mist.
- Scents: Wet limestone and timber; a hint of wool, beeswax, and the earthy clean of rain.
- Sounds: Rain tapping windowpanes, whispered instructions, the soft scrape of tools, footsteps on cobbles outside.
- Reflection: Making by hand slows the mind; patterns reveal how memory travels through materials.
