Fifth Journey Day 49: The Silence Didn’t Ask

Date: June 26, 2025
Location: Klaipėda, Lithuania

I took the ferry across the lagoon to Smiltynė just after noon. It was a short trip, but it made me feel like I had traveled. The ride was short, and the wind was steady. The sea wasn't loud, but it felt solid and present. The gulls flew low. Their shadows moved slowly across the water.

On the other hand, the forest began without any introduction. There was no grand entrance; it was just pine trunks spaced evenly and the dull thud of sand underfoot. I followed a narrow path where the air smelled like resin and the quiet sound of moving needles filled the air. At one point, I stopped walking and just stood there, listening. There was no destination, and that made the space feel larger — not just physically, but in the way it held your attention.

I didn't sketch, even though I had paper with me. It felt more honest to simply take it in. Sometimes I worry that when I try to capture a moment, I make it seem less exciting. But this didn't go away just because I didn't do anything about it.

The light never quite made it through the clouds. Everything stayed soft — silvers and greens with that pale sand acting like a muted canvas under it all. I saw the faint tracks of animals near the edge of the dunes. There's no drama, just traces.

I came back feeling cold, but I was okay. The ferry came back quietly. The city greeted me with the sound of cups clinking together and the sound of bikes moving slowly on wet pavement. I didn't talk to anyone today, and I felt good about it.

What I remember most is how quiet the forest was. It felt like the stillness let me arrive without an explanation.
