130 days: Somchai Pakdee

Today I spent the afternoon at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC), an architectural marvel that spirals skyward. The galleries were filled with contemporary artworks that challenge and reinterpret traditional Thai culture. As I wandered through the exhibits, I was drawn to a vibrant installation that played with light and shadow. This is where I met Somchai Pakdee, a local artist whose work was on display. Somchai's installation used traditional Thai motifs in a modern context, creating a dialogue between past and present. He shared his journey of studying fine arts in Bangkok and later traveling throughout Asia to expand his horizons. Our conversation delved into the challenges of preserving cultural identity in art while embracing global influences. Inspired by his approach, I sketched out some ideas for a new piece that blends traditional Singaporean elements with the modern artistic techniques I've observed today. As the day drew to a close, the humid embrace of the city seemed to echo the warmth of the art community here. Meeting Somchai not only gave me insight into the local art scene, but also rekindled my passion for exploring cultural narratives through my art.
